Detroit Head Chef Ben Wiley attended school in Grand Rapids before he left to join the culinary world on the west side of the state. Ben’s first position with Maru was at Maru Grand Rapids when they opened in 2012, and from there made the move to open Maru Midland and then again a few years later to open Maru Detroit.

Why does Ben love Maru?

He loves the family culture and opportunity for growth that his position as chef offers.

“There aren’t a ton of barriers set for anyone outside of the own determination,” he said.

Stop into Maru Detroit and have Ben make you his favorite dish – a negi-hama maki (yellowtail and scallion roll). Simple but delicious.

Made with organic tofu, asparagus, mango, roasted red pepper, avocado and green goddess dressing, this veggie roll can also be made vegan (sans the green goddess dressing!).

Maru Kalamazoo officially opened its doors to the city on March 4th!

This location is set in an old train depot downtown, right next to HopCat and a few blocks away from Black Owl Cafe (Kalamazoo Coffee Company). The bright interior is complete with exposed brick, big wooden beams and hardwood floors. Although it is very “Maru” in aesthetic, it has a more rustic feel that makes it a bit more unique to the other locations.

Guests can enjoy a twist on Japanese cuisine such as small plates, creative sushi rolls and hibachi grills as well as craft cocktails utilizing Asian ingredients, local beers and interesting wine selections.
